So what is salt water ich?

Saltwater ich is caused by the parasite named 'Cryptocaryon irritans'. It is also known as 'Marine White Spot Disease'. The term Ich is derived from the freshwater parasite Ichthyophthirius. The name of the disease came to be known as Ich since both of these parasites cause white spots on the fish.

These parasites are microscopic. Hence, they cannot be seen through naked eyes unless you have a scientific microscope. But if there is an outbreak of Ich, we can see some symptoms such as: fish scratching itself on rocks, white spots on fins, gills and all over the body of fish.

Sometimes, it is also possible that you do not notice any of the above symptoms. But that does not mean that the fish is not infested with Saltwater Ich. No visible symptoms are seen when the parasites infest only on the gills. You can observe the behavior of fish and come to the conclusion whether the fish is infested or not. Treating Marine White Spot Disease (Saltwater Ich)

1. Freshwater Dip:

One of the most common and effective method to treat variety of parasites is Freshwater Dip. This method involves putting the infected fish into the complete freshwater for some period. Putting the infected fish into the freshwater aims to remove or kill all the parasites on the outer body of the fish.

* Take a bucket of RO water.
* Match the pH level and temperature of the bucket water with aquarium water.
* Add the infected fish into the bucket for 2 - 5 minutes.
* Now just observe your fish for sometime. Fish may float or sink into the water. Its just normal.
* If you observe fish into an extreme stress, return the fish and try some other way of treating it.
* If your fish handles the treatment, freshwater will be able to kill of all the parasites from the outer body of the fish.


2. Hyposalinity:

Hyposalinity is one of the non-chemical method to treat saltwater ich. This method involves lowering the salinity of water to a level which is extremely close to that of freshwater.

* Lower the gravity of your fish aquarium to 1.009-1.010
* Let it be for a few weeks.
* Examine the fish aquarium at some intervals.
* If you examine your fish in an extreme stress, reverse or stop this treatment by gradually reversing the gravity of aquarium.
* But in most of the cases, Hyposalinity will help you to remove of kill off all the parasites.

* NOTE: Never use this method with invertebrates.

3. Changing the water:

This method involves changing the 50% water of your fish aquarium every day for few weeks. This method is really simple. All you need is a bare bottom tank so that you can remove all the tomonts which fall down. Changing the 50% water everyday for few weeks in a bare bottom fish tank will help you to treat the saltwater ich.


● Some commercial treatments are also available for Saltwater Ich. But these treatments involves toxic chemicals. You must be very careful before using any market products. Also, you must carefully read instructions of use before using it on your fish.
